The workbook has been developed around three key questions:
- How do we go about developing programs for children and young people in our community that are relevant, high quality, and sustainable?
- How do we go about building a sustainable organization that focuses on the needs and interests of children and young people in our community?
- What might Big Brothers Big Sisters agencies and Boys and Girls Clubs do together to enhance programs and resources for children and young people in local communities, and ensure both sustainable programs and organizations?
The first question is addressed in Parts 1 and 2. The second question is addressed in Parts 3 and 4. The two questions are linked, for quality and sustainable programs require quality and sustainable organizations to provide a base of support. The third question is addressed throughout the workbook.
- In Part 1, which focuses on good processes for thinking about new programs, we have suggested that if a community has a Big Brothers Big Sisters agency, but not a Boys and Girls Club organization, then the development of a new Boys and Girls Club might best be done through the Big Brothers Big Sisters agency. Or, if a community has a Boys and Girls Club, but not a Big Brothers Big Sisters agency, then the development of a new Big Brothers Big Sisters program might best be done through the Boys and Girls Club.
- The same thought processes are continued throughout Part 2. In Chapter 6 of Part 2, focusing on finding a good organizational home for a new program, we have suggested that you think very carefully before also launching a new organization as well.
- In Part 4, the possibilities of deep partnering and merging are discussed, particularly from the perspectives of those communities or geographic regions where there already exists both a Big Brothers Big Sisters agency and a Boys and Girls Club.
Again, the language has been kept as general as possible so that the information and advice is also relevant to many other organizations concerned with children and youth.
