Chapter 5: Planning For Program Sustainability

Standards, Membership Requirements And Best Practices

Regardless of which programs your organization offers, they must meet Organizational and Service Delivery Standards established by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada, and/or the Membership Requirements of Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada39. It is essential that you review the national standards and requirements to ensure that your program and organization can abide by these obligations.

As you develop your program and organization, be sure to design the program and the organization around these standards and requirements.

Big Brothers Big Sisters programs and Boys and Girls Clubs have, through years of experience and research, studied what works best. You will need to incorporate these best practices into your program. For instance, it is essential that your Big Brothers Big Sisters programs contain state-of-the-art practices in screening, training, matching, monitoring and closure. Similarly, your Boys and Girls Club must have formal screening and selection processes in place for volunteers. Increasingly, funders and donors want to know about what outcomes or end results you are achieving, not just what you do and how many people you serve. For more detailed information on developing your program’s marketing and communications plan, you might consult Mentoring Canada’s on-line mentoring program training module at www.mentoringcanada.ca/training/Mentors/index.html.
