Chapter 3 : Taking a Deeper Community Approach

Sources of Information

This might seem like a lot of information to collect. The good news is that much of it already exists, and you just need to dig it up. Here are some ideas regarding how and where you might find the information you require:

  • Your Provincial learning/education department, local school boards and individual schools can often provide meaningful statistics and reports
  • Law enforcement agencies can provide a wealth of information regarding the incidence and type of youth crime and other youth issues in your community
  • Community service organizations and funders often collect revealing statistics and produce valuable reports on the issues children and young people are facing
  • Media reports often document relevant information
  • Statistics Canada, your city/town/municipal offices, and local economic development agencies keep statistics that describe the characteristics of your population.
  • Many communities have a directory or listing of community services, which can help you to identify the programs that already exist in your area.  You can often find such a listing in your telephone book or by contacting your city/town/municipal office or a local social service office.
The Internet can be a rich source of significant information
