Chapter 3 : Taking a Deeper Community Approach

Introduction

If you are reading this chapter, it may be for one of several reasons:

  • First, in your initial exploration28, perhaps you decided it was important to take a much deeper and broader look at the needs and interests of children and young people, and the resources that already exist, before opting for a specific Big Brothers Big Sisters program or a Boys and Girls Club
  • Second, perhaps in beginning to develop a viable program plan29, you have decided that you need to carry out a more detailed community needs assessment on which to base your plan
  • Or finally, you are being required to undertake a community needs assessment as part of the process of applying for membership with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Canada or Boys and Girls Clubs of Canada

This chapter will guide you through the processes involved in more deeply examining the needs and interests of your community’s children and young people by conducting a community needs assessment.
