Chapter 2: Developing Big Brothers Big Sisters Programs And Boys And Girls Clubs

No One Right Way

It is important to note that the guidance this chapter offers is really just a starting point. This is not meant to be a chronological, complete, step-by-step prescription that must be uniformly followed in every community. The process of initiating a Big Brothers Big Sisters program or a Boys and Girls Club looks different in each community that undertakes it. In fact, from a local perspective, Big Brothers Big Sisters programs and organizations can look quite different, as can Boys and Girls Clubs. Be wary of assuming that a national brand name means the same in each community. What they do share is membership in a national association, and a commitment to common values, principles, and standards.

Many variables will determine the sequence and speed by which a Big Brothers Big Sisters program or a Boys and Girls Club develops, as well as the form it eventually takes, for example:

  • The unique context of your community
  • The specific needs and interests of children, youth, and families
  • The talents of those involved in developing the program
  • The level and type of support from funders, donors, volunteers and community organizations
