Chapter 1: Getting Started With a Dream

What Have You Learned

My Planning Kit - Add to My Kit - click hereWhat have you discovered? There are three key questions that you might consider at this point.

  1. Is there an interest and a need for a Big Brothers Big Sisters program in my community?

  2. Is there an interest and a need for a Boys and Girls Club in my community?

  3. Is there a need in my community to take a much deeper look at the needs and interests of children and young people, and who can best respond? You are more likely to answer “yes” to this question if there are already a variety of preventive and developmental programs for children and young people; and/or, there are some very specific issues facing children and young people, or particular groups of children and young people, that have surfaced in your exploration.

If you have answered "Yes" to questions 1 and 2, you might want to start reading Chapter 2, which focuses on developing a viable program plan. If you have answered "Yes" to question 3, you might want to start reading Chapter 3 which focuses on deeper community needs assessments. These chapters have been designed to help you take your explorations to the next stage, and to begin to act.

If you have answered "No" to all three questions, your exploration is over. Take a rest, have a good sleep. Another dream will surface.

Still Unsure
If you have answered, "I do not know yet" to all three questions, or to the question that most concerns you, the initial exploration needs to continue for a while.

The next step might be to bring together some of the people that you interviewed, provide them with the information that you gathered, and hold a group conversation about the key questions. Collectively, you will likely have a better chance of answering the questions.
